Eastside Interceptor Gravity Sanitary Sewer Project

General Project Information:

The replacement of the eastside intercepting gravity sanitary sewer includes; replacement of the existing intercepting gravity sanitary sewer that is parallel to the Badger Mill Creek.

Project Details:

The replacement of the eastside intercepting gravity sanitary sewer (installed in early 1960s) includes the installation of a new intercepting gravity sanitary sewer while maintaining the service of the existing eastside intercepting gravity sanitary sewer during construction.  The existing intercepting gravity sanitary sewer is on the west / north side of Badger Mill Creek, the new intercepting gravity sanitary sewer will be on the east / south side of Badger Mill Creek.

The project involves re-connecting many local gravity sanitary sewers along the project corridor from adjacent neighborhoods.

Melody Circle:

Melody Circle will be partially closed to re-connect the local sewer to the new eastside intercepting gravity sanitary sewer.  Access will be provided to local residents but minor daytime closures may occur.

 South Main Street:

S. Main Street will remain open to traffic; the new eastside intercepting gravity sanitary sewer will cross under S. Main Street (adjacent to the Badger Mill Creek) using trenchless technology. Shoulder closures and/or periodic flagging operations may occur during deliveries of construction equipment and/or materials.

 Lincoln Street Covered Bridge Trail:

Lincoln Street covered bridge crossing of Badger Mill Creek will be closed when construction activities are present.

 Glacier Ridge Path:

Responses to public Inquiries and comments

Staff Response to Public Comments from 12.14.20 City Council Meeting

Common Questions / Answers regarding the Project:

Q – What work is Dane County Parks performing?

A – Please see the Dane County Parks project website.

https://www.danecountyparks.com/parksproject/detail/Badger-Mill-Creek-Stream-Restoration

Q – How is the area being restored along the Badger Mill Creek between S. Main Street and Ice   Age Trail bridge over Badger Mill Creek near the pine forest (north of Arbor Vitae Place)?

A – The area will be restored with a native floodplain seed and a savanna woodland edge seed mix.  The seed location varies depending on site conditions.  After the sewer project is completed the Ice Age Trail and Verona Parks Department are coordinating trail and habitat improvements.

Q – Where is the Ice Age Trail going?

A – The trail is temporarily closed for the safety of the public, trail users, and the contractors performing the work.  The post sewer project trail location has been coordinated with Ice Age Trail for when the sewer project is completed; ultimately the trail will be within the same corridor but in a location on higher ground making the trail more accommodating during spring, summer and fall rains.  The trail will be higher and drier.

Q – Why is the corridor so wide?

A – We understand that this is an eye opener and a change.  The corridor follows the same route and approximate area that was cleared in 1996 for the initial construction of the     Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District force main pipe.  The 1996 construction was     necessary when the City of Verona decommissioned their waste water treatment plant and   connected to the regional sewerage district for treatment.  The current project limits are   wider due to this project installing multiple pipes, deeper pipes, maintaining operation of   multiple existing sewer pipes, connecting to eight local gravity sewer systems, room for   staging and transport of construction materials, and workers safety.  We narrowed the   corridor as much as possible taking into account the environmental and the overall needs of the project.
